Deuteronomy 18:18-19

I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. And whoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him.

In the midst of giving laws pertaining to Israel’s leaders, God reveals that he will raise up another leader, a prophet who will be like Moses. This must have been encouraging to God’s people.

After all, Moses was an incredible leader. He spoke on behalf of God. He interceded on behalf of the people. He delivered them from bondage to the Egyptians. He was leading them to the Promised Land.

But Moses wasn’t perfect. His own sin and disobedience would keep him from leading the people into Canaan—the Promised Land—and instead they wandered through the wilderness for 40 years.

But God promises to send another leader, a prophet who would not succumb to sin or disobedience. A prophet who would speak directly on behalf of God. A prophet who would intercede on behalf of his people. A prophet who would deliver them from the bondage of sin. A prophet who would lead them to a promised eternity with him.

Moses was an incredible leader. But there was an even greater leader to come.

Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God's house. For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself.
